Having just returned from Rome for a few days before the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV, I want to offer some thoughts on my experience in attending the funeral of Pope Francis and in participating in the conclave. Two images come to mind.
Holding on and letting go
My children have a hard time letting go of things. I have the basement to prove it. There are boxes and boxes of hockey trophies, art supplies, sweatshirts that will never fit anyone in our family again, school projects from going on 20 years ago and books — so many books.

Local school’s mock conclave goes viral around the globe
Two days before Pope Leo XIV, a native Chicagoan who is a member of the Augustinian religious community, was elected the 267th pope by the College of Cardinals, students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy elected their own native Chicagoan in a mock conclave, and the student elected took the name “Augustine” when he accepted his election.
Service of local World War II chaplain highlighted in online exhibit
Father John Beyenka was one of about 100 priests from the Archdiocese of Chicago who served as military chaplains during World War II. He enlisted in 1943 and was appointed a first lieutenant and a chaplain. He went to basic training in Louisiana and Texas, and then was assigned to the newly formed 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division of the Fifth Army.
